Out and About

Tipperary is Ireland’s largest inland county sharing a border with eight counties, more than any other. Whether it’s Hiking or Heritage, it’s a great place to start, with day trips – under an hour – to Limerick, Kilkenny, and Cork City.

Things to do

The Locality

Meaney’s Homestead sits in isolation amid broad fields and narrow roads. The nearest village Ballyporeen is just 3.5km distant, where you will find a grocery shop and of course, Meaneys Bar.
The village is best known for being the ancestral home of United States President Ronald Reagan, who visited the village in 1984 and delivered a speech to its residents.

But Mitchelstown, a 17min drive, has a full range of supermarkets, pharmacies etc.
This is the heartland of Dairy production in Ireland, and Mitchelstown is home to Kerrygold Park, a €40 million butter production and packing facility producing some 50,000 tons of butter per annum for the brand worldwide.

Though rural, the area is well-connected — ideally placed for day trips to the Rock of Cashel, Cahir Castle, and the charming market towns of Tipperary, Cahir, and Cashel. History runs deep in these parts, and the stories of the land are woven into every stone and stream.
The local area is also steeped in spiritual history, with monastic ruins, ancient ringforts, and sacred wells nearby — ideal for those looking to connect with Ireland’s quieter, mystical side.

The ubiquitous Galtee Mountains provide a breathtaking backdrop to the cottage, making every window feel like a painting. They are Ireland’s highest inland mountain range.
There are mapped walking routes across forest tracks and open moorland, with countless trails throughout the mountain range and in the nearby Glengarra Woods. The breadth of the Galtee Mountains at over 30km long, means there is something for everyone to explore.

The summit of Galtymore at 919m is one of the top ten peaks in Ireland, while the lowland waymarked loops of Glounreagh and Attychraan on the southern slopes in the Ballyhoura region provide an accessible option for a wide range of hillwalkers, mountain bikers and explorers. There are many trails to suit every level of walker.

The picturesque Glen of Aherlow is popular for its trails, and rich heritage, featuring ancient sites like St. Pecaun’s well and a statue of Christ the King.

Tipperary is famous for its horse breeding industry and is the home of Coolmore Stud, the largest thoroughbred breeding operation in the world. There are racecourses at Clonmell, Mallow and Tipperary.
