This generous Georgian manor house close by Lough Corrib, dates from the late seventeenth century. Sitting in two acres of gardens, the interiors recollect more measured times, where anticipation of the next big salmon was the evening’s entertainment.

Within striking distance of the delights of Galway City, and on the verge of Connemara, this is gentle Ireland at its best.

The house is an intriguing mix of Georgian elegance, rustic vernacular farmhouse and striking modern design. The 15m high chimney stacks at either end of the house date from the late seventeenth century, whilst the rest of the historic fabric is largely eighteenth century.

A sturdy door in the granite framed entrance opens into the spacious hallway, with switchback stairs leading to the accommodation.

Polished black flagstones follow through to the large eclectic country kitchen, which is the heart of the house.

At its centre is a muscular table made from an ash tree felled in the garden, and a large and recently restored 80-year-old working range.

The house boasts fully restored interior woodwork, including an impressive, perfectly panelled reception room to the right of the entrance hall.

This room features a grand piano. A large wood-burning stove is set into the hearth at one end, while tall glazed double-doors open onto the rear garden.

Panel shutters frame the windows – deep enough for cushioned seats.

The extensive programme of restoration and conservation recently culminated in the addition of a light-filled garden room at the rear of the house, where bi-fold doors embrace the back garden – a stunning design in glass and steel by internationally acclaimed architects McCullough Mulvin.

Before reaching the bedrooms, a roomy landing at the top of the stairs is home to a slightly exotic pipe organ for budding recitalists.

There are four ensuite double bedrooms, differentiated by colour. Two of them have functioning fireplaces.

The blue room has a seductive canopy bed and a quirky period style bathroom.

Events

Headfest – an annual community festival suitable for all the family, which takes place in early June every year.

Galway International Arts Festival – a major international event attracting performers from around the globe to Galway for a two-week programme in mid July including  theatre, music, visual arts, opera, street spectacle, dance, discussion, and comedy.

 

The Locality

 

 
The house is about 35 minutes North West of Galway City, a secluded area that is one of the best kept secrets in Galway. The nearest village is Headford, just five minutes’ drive away, where you can find a supermarket, hotel, and several cosy pubs and restaurants.

The house was built by the Skerrett family – one of the famous tribes of Galway – and dates from the late seventeenth century, with many an addition along the way. Perhaps the most famous member of the family was Nicholas Skerrett, Archbishop of Tuam in the mid 1500s.

The townland is adjacent to Lough Corrib, the largest lake in the State, stretching Northwards for about 56 Kms from Galway City.

There are well over 300 islands to be explored on the lake. A stroll will bring you to one of several nearby unspoilt inlets, however the closest jetty is at Kilbeg Pier, 7 minutes’ drive away.

Lough Corrib is renowned for its stocks of salmon and wild brown trout. The salmon-fishing season opens on 1st February and the trout season on 15th February, and both end on 30th September.

Mayfly fishing on Corrib is legendary. From mid-May, and for a couple of weeks, the surface of the lake becomes alive with these winged insects and the trout love ‘em – the perfect opportunity to trick one of them onto your hook!

Boats and tackle are available for hire locally, but visitors are advised to employ a local guide or ghillie, at least on the first outing.

There are many prehistoric burial cairns, Iron Age stone enclosures, early Norman and later castles, and several monastic sites.

One of the most impressive surviving Franciscan friaries in Ireland, Ross Errilly is 10 mins North of the house near the border with County Mayo. Historians argue over the identity of its founder as well as its date, with 1460 the most likely.

The charming village of Cong lies at the top of Lough Corrib. This was the location for John Ford’s 1952 Oscar-winning film, The Quiet Man, which featured John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara and Barry Fitzgerald.

The Quiet Man

Filming was mostly done on the grounds of Ashford Castle, which has hardly changed since, and the village continues to attract movie tourists. The Castle is currently employed as an exclusive hotel with an outstanding international reputation, amazing service, exquisite dining, and a host of activities to indulge in.

Sir William Wilde built a country home in Cong inspiring his son Oscar Wilde to write about his experiences in South Mayo an area he frequently returned to throughout his life.

From the lobby, a short hallway to the left leads into a spacious sitting room, with a lofty limestone chimney breast that bisects the dazzling view of the Bay.

For winter comforts, there is a woodburning stove and substantial flat screen television.

Velvet upholstery and drapes, together with oak floors are typical throughout this home.

Heavy sliding barn doors open through to a cool sea-green kitchen, with bold walls of white and black quartz. A cooks dream, this kitchen is fully equipped with everything from a coffee machine and nutribullet, to an air fryer.

Panoramic full height glazing maximises the omnipresent ocean views, with a broad, glazed sliding door onto a balcony. From here, external stairs connect to the paved patio below.

A black quartz breakfast bar with stools, divides this inclusive dining space.

This living area is at an angled junction in the floor plan, with a main corridor back to the entrance, and an archway through to a generous and chic panelled dining room.

A more formal affair with a table that can seat the entire compliment of visitors on convivial suede buttoned benches, and with a cocktail bar, wine cooler and ice machine in the corner, surrounded by sable stained panelling and stunning views.

Beyond and behind a sliding glass wall, a monumental flat-screen tv monopolises the adjoining television lounge.

A modern electric fire and a well cushioned sofa group complete the home-movie harmony. A Nintendo Wii is a welcome addition for Children (and adults!).

Off the main corridor back to the entrance hall, a family bathroom boasts a super double ended, extra deep, Corian slipper bath.

Beside it, is the only bedroom on this level, with double bed and generous wardrobe space.

Oak return-stairs at the corner of the house lead to bedroom accommodation on the lower ground floor, with hallways running in two directions.

The elegant master bedroom lies at the end of one. With windows in two walls, it has a generous walk-in wardrobe and an ensuite shower room.

Beside it is a colourful twin bedroom, also with dual aspect views and an ensuite bathroom – kids will love it. Complete with Lego, Fuzzball table and family board games.

A picture window along the apposing corridor exposes the workout room with its multiple fitness machines.

Here too you will find the traditional steam sauna – a super addition to any holiday escape.

There are two more distinctive double bedrooms along this hallway, both with ensuite shower rooms and walk-in wardrobes.



 

The Annex Apartment

A separate adjacent building has a folksy single bedroom apartment that sleeps three in zip-and-link beds that can be arranged in any combination, or used individually. It is on the first floor with a large shower room, galley kitchen, and living dining area.

Office

If you have to work on your vacation, the ground floor of the annex is home to a fully functional office with two workstations, high speed WiFi access, and assorted premium equipment.

There is also a dedicated kitchenette and WC here.

Outside

The gardens have been beautifully landscaped with wonderful traditional masonry work in local stone to accommodate its unique site and location above Sruthán Pier – just a stone’s throw from the sea.

There are two entrance gates to the property, a stunning curved driveway, and ample parking.

A brick path surrounds the house, and under the escarpment in the shady back stretch, there is a large dual temperature Spa swim pool, with separate hot tub and an outdoor shower.

The Locality

 

 

The busy Carraroe peninsula on the northern stretches of Galway Bay overlooks an Atlantic inlet crowded with islands. The area is typical of the intensely crenulated Connemara coast, with dry stone walls and boggy fields, and big skies.

A drive or cycle around the deeply indented coastline reveals many beaches of staggering beauty, and some of golden coral. You will also discover quirky little fishing harbours which provide sanctuary from the huge Atlantic swells.

The local village of Carraroe has a small supermarket, a great Fish & Chip shop and a couple of cosy pubs.

This is a Gaeltacht area, meaning that the thriving local community speak Irish on a daily basis.

There are four summer schools here that teach Irish to secondary-school students from all over Ireland. It is also a centre for the Irish-language media, with the Irish-language radio station, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta located in nearby Casla, and the Irish-language television station, TG4, just a few kilometres east. Church services are conducted in Irish, as are all school and daily cultural activities.

10 minutes away, Trá an Dóilín is a beautiful and unusual Blue Flag beach made of very rare biogenic coral. There are lifeguards in summer months, toilets and great swimming.

Keep your eyes open for the hardy Connemara Pony whose exact origins are uncertain. A breed collected internationally, they are known for their athleticism, versatility and good disposition, well suited to these semi barren peninsulas.

The house is just 40 minutes’ drive from Galway City, the capital of the west of Ireland and second only to Dublin in yearly visitors. With its charming streets, restaurants and nightlife mixed with culture, traditional Irish music and activities for all the family, it is worth a visit.


State-of-the-art Production Facilities in the Connemara Gaeltacht

Studio Cuan is a special Music Production Studio with one of the loveliest recording rooms in the country. It is equipped with excellent facilities to ensure the highest quality for all types of sessions. 24 minutes away by car.

Fíbín Media is an award winning, Television Production Company that have a purpose-built television studio in Galway. 9 minutes away by car.
They also have a mobile recording studio that is available to rent.


 

At the end of August, Carraroe hosts one of the largest annual regattas for Galway Hooker boats – a distinctive form of traditional Irish fishing boat. Some of these sailing boats with their conspicuous rust-coloured sails are berthed at Sruthán Pier. The boats can accommodate heavy loads and was in active service until the 1950′s ferrying supplies, turf and livestock to and from the Aran islands.

The infamous Aran Islands at the mouth of Galway Bay are famed for their dramatic cliffs and distinctive knitted jumpers. The three islands have maintained the culture and heritage of traditional Irish life, and fascinate the thousands of visitors who make the journey every year.
They can be reached by ferry from Rossaveal which is on the opposite side of the bay – just 7 minutes away by car – or by plane from Connemara Airport, which is just 10 minutes away by car. The boat trip takes 40 minutes and you can bring a bike, or hire one there.
The spectacular semi-circular stone fort of Dun Aengus – reckoned to be about 2,500 years old – backs onto a 90 metre cliff and is considered one of the most important pre-historic sites in Western Europe.

On your way to Galway City you’ll pass through Spiddal, a picturesque seaside village and one of the largest Irish speaking settlements in the Galway Gaeltacht. There is a unique Craft Village there, and a selection of pubs where most weekends you can catch a “live trad” night.

It has two south-facing beaches connected by a scenic walking / cycling path. The rocks behind the pier, and the pier itself, are used for shore angling when the mackerel shoals are in.

This extremely elegant historic mansion overlooks Lough Derg, and is one of the finest houses on the lake.

Approached by a winding avenue which travels through mature parkland and woodlands, it affords spectacular views and the utmost privacy being set well back from the road, and invisible except from the lake.

The 734 square metre Victorian main house, with some forty rooms, was extensively refurbished yet retains the integrity of the original period features – ornate cornicing, broad wooden floors, antique marble fireplaces, panelled mahogany doors and decorative architraves.

The formal entrance is from an expansive west facing terrace that overlooks an immaculate stretch of lawn descends running down to the lake.

This is an exceptionally large home, a full-time daily housekeeper is present with the exception of Sunday unless otherwise requested.
Cook and extra house-keeping can be provided at additional cost.

​Leading off the drawing room, via a hallway that spans the ground floor, is yet another classic reception room, a vibrant and atmospheric library, busy with books.

Much used for television, the elaborate white marble fireplace is fitted with a more practical wood-burning stove.​

A back staircase to first floor accommodation, fitted with a chair lift, is accessed from a doorway in the library, as is the store of logs for the stove.

Beyond the library, in the same wing, is an alternative and more intimate television sitting room, decorated in luminous lemon yellow.

This room has a generous if unexpected bathroom adjacent – a legacy from a former layout.

To the southern side of the entrance hall, there is a formal dining room.

Adjoining the Dining room there is a short corridor leading past a cloakroom and small office to the Kitchen and Breakfast room.

A purposeful blend of country style and professional catering, the kitchen is well appointed for feeding such a large household – with three separate cookers.

Additional contiguous rooms include a Butlers pantry and a larder. Those quirky ceiling hooks would have been intended for hanging hams and the like…

The cosy breakfast room situated just beyond the kitchen has a woodburning stove, and a door to the cobbled courtyard, which is at the centre of this home.


 

Other facilities surrounding the courtyard include a small workout gym looking onto it, with several machines and a shower, and a generous laundry room to the rear.

Bedrooms

An impressive return staircase leads from behind the entrance hall to a bright sky-lit landing.

There are four magnificent and individual bedrooms off the main landing on the first floor.

Three have glorious westerly views to the lake – one with an awesome balcony – while the fourth has views over the central courtyard.

Two of them enjoy en-suite bathrooms, with separate shower rooms just across the hall for the other two.;

A dog-leg corridor brings you to the elegant master bedroom with its stunning mahogany four poster bed, dual aspect views, and black & white tiled en-suite bathroom.

Another opulent bedroom lies at the end of a further dog-leg corridor, past the back stairs. It has a private and equally spacious bathroom with free standing roll-top bath and shower next-door.

 

Outside


The 100-acre lakefront estate comes with its own private harbour, landing stage and fishing rights.

The grounds of the Estate are a particular feature and offer a mixture of mature gardens with lawns, flower beds and shrubberies surrounding the house and sweeping down to the lake.

There are maintained walks through the mature woodlands, including, the Hazel Walk through a Hazel Tree plantation, the Beech Walk, Lady Alice’s Walk, The Cathedral Walk and The North Walk.

Afternoon strolls around the remarkably well-maintained walled garden will be a lasting memory, and is a highlight of any visit.

For those keen on hunting there are a choice of local packs within easy reach, namely The Ormond Hunt, The North Tipperary Foxhounds and The Galway Blazers. The property is also the perfect terrain for a private shoot with good woodland coverage.

 

The Locality

 

 

The pretty village of Terryglass is just 10 minutes away, and has a long and distinguished history with a monastery being founded there by St. Columba in 549 A.D. The famous Book of Leinster was produced at the Monastery and can now be seen in Trinity College Dublin.

The village has a strong reputation for food and has two award-winning bar and restaurants — Paddy’s Bar and The Derg Inn — that are well worth a visit or two.

Portumna, 20 minutes away, is the nearest sizable town, home to the Workhouse Museum, a chilling example of this much hated alternative to starvation. The bridge here is the nearest Shannon crossing point and the link to Galway and the West.
You may also like to visit the gardens of popular Portumna Castle – more of a fortified house, with renaissance influences unusual for the period in Ireland.

Nenagh is a little further away in the opposite direction, but is considerably better served with shops and restaurants.
While you’re there, you might like to check out the medieval Nenagh castle, and climb its 101-step spiral staircase. Access to the tower is through a passageway within the base of the wall.

Cycling is best done in the 1,500 acres Portumna Forest Park at the top end of the lake, which is also home to the annual Forest Marathon and 100k Ultra Marathon.

Lough Derg at 118k sq in area and 39k long is the third largest lake in Ireland, and the last lake on the Shannon system before it meets the Atlantic Ocean.
The river Shannon itself is the longest river in the British Isles, and more importantly, the most navigable…
The best way to explore the lake is by boat, as it is deeply indented with no handy shoreline cycle route.

Fishing is one of the main attractions to the region, and the Pike which is the largest of the freshwater predators, is a prime target. There is no close season for pike in Ireland and anglers may fish for pike all year round.

The heritage town of Killaloe at the southern tip of the lough is the birthplace of Brian Boru, high King of Ireland at the dawn of the second millennium. It is also home to Limerick University Sports Adventure Centre – which provides a wide range of activities.

For business clients, who require a private office, there are two available on the ground floor – one with a patio in the walled garden.

A function room adjacent to the offices and cinema, is frequently used as a games room for kids, but serves equally well for hosting small events or celebrations.

Outside

The five acres of garden is a simply stunning blend of whimsical and formal, with some market garden thrown in. There is a mature pond, a woodland walk, delightful sculptures, beehives, and even a treehouse.

Within the manicured walled garden at the rear there are several seating areas to enjoy barbecues or just chill.

If you need to catch up on your golf, you will enjoy the landscaped all-weather putting green complete with sand bunker.

The owners have a particular interest in the healing qualities of nature and are currently initiating the Aventine Wellness Gardens at the rear of the estate, which will be available to guests.

The Locality

 

 

The house is located a seven-minute walk from Foxrock Village, an affluent leafy garden suburb of Dublin that was devised in the 1860s offering ‘the fine air of a district midway between the mountains and the sea’.

Immediately to the South lie the Dublin mountains, which continue on through County Wicklow.

During the civil war Lis na Carrig was raided by anti-treaty forces. It is reported that Michael Collins visited the house just days before his assassination in Co. Cork.

The area is notable for Leopardstown Racecourse, which is more than 130 years old and is the only remaining horse-track in the greater metropolitan area. The are several golf clubs nearby – the Foxrock one dates from the same period.

Sam Beckett

Samuel Beckett, writer, was born locally in 1906, and the singer Joe Dolan, lived here until his death in 2007.

Getting around

Cycling is an option, but it will be convenient to bring a car as it is quite a walk to the nearest public transport or indeed grocery outlets.

Dublin’s M50 orbital motorway passes nearby, which is very convenient for quick access to points North and West of the City.

Carrickmines Green line Luas station tram is about a 20-minute walk away, but it also has a free Park ‘n Ride car park. Trams leave every 10 minutes or so and take about half an hour to St. Stephen’s Green in central Dublin. This can be a convenient way to go, as the line passes the retail units of Dundrum Town Centre, and eliminates parking problems.

Shopping

Fruit and vegetables are available from Thomas’s in the village, just along from the butcher. There is a comprehensive shopping mall at Carrickmines Park which is only about 5 minutes by car, but for most groceries, Dunnes Stores at Cornelscourt is the best bet, 5 minutes in the opposite direction.

The Georgian fan-light entrance, flanked by imposing limestone pillars, opens into a spacious central hallway that extends the depth of the house, with a couple of steps down to the back door.

The dining table seats ten on Chippendale mahogany, and the tall sash windows are shuttered and beautifully draped, with moulded cornices and panelled doors, typical of the period.

On the opposite side of the hall, an alabaster white kitchen occupies the rear quarter.
With a slightly less formal central breakfast table, Belfast sink, and large Aga range, it is gentleman’s country-style.

To the front, the sitting room combines comfortable shabby-chic sofas with a white marble fireplace, matching white built-in furniture, and flat screen TV, for relaxing evenings.

 

Bedrooms

There are four inviting double bedrooms located in each corner of the upstairs floor, with an opulent chandelier lighting the impressive central stairwell.

They are all ensuite, with shower enclosures and baths, – the two at the front retaining pairs of sash windows.

Lower ground floor

The basement area is home to a large laundry and utility room, and a rustic brick cellar for wines.

Here also, there is a reclusive office, and a pool room to perfect your pocket shots.

 

The Garden Wing

A small formal garden is laid out to rear, with paved areas, lawns, shrubs and pots.

Stretching along one side of the garden is separate and chic accommodation in the form of a two-storey converted out-building.

The ground floor is a long open-plan space, combining a living room, kitchen and dining area, which features glazed French doors onto the garden terrace.
