Developed from the bones of a cottage project, this spacious single-storey riverside residence enjoys completely unique views across the River Nore. With crenulated roof lines and semi-hexagonal bay windows everywhere, this home is extravagant and lush.

Half way between Waterford and Kilkenny, and just an hour from the Rosslare ferry, it’s perfect for private events and family gatherings.

 

Points, Plaster and Corbels

Flamboyant Gothic Ogee arched windows characterize the curious brick façade, in contrast to the main entrance and driveway.

The hexagonal entrance lobby has elaborate arches, cornices and plasterwork that typify this home.

A wonderful reception room lies directly ahead through a pair of arched doors, with a spectacular pastoral view through a triptych of French doors flanked by two fully-draped floor to ceiling sash windows.

The house is centrally heated, but plenty of fire wood is supplied for the two wood-burning stoves.

Opposing corridors, tiled in Classic Victorian octagon style, lead from the entrance lobby.
To one side is an expansive living room, with a bay of three vivid pointy-arch windows, generous sofas, a broad TV, and a second wood-burning stove set into a black marble hearth.

Brilliant full height windows are a feature of the house throughout.

A broad archway connects the adjacent kitchen and dining area, with its inclusive curved central preparation island.

French doors at the end open onto a sunny enclosed area, with all-weather grass surface – safe for little ones and pets.

A single door from the living room gives access to the terrace-with-a-view, while twin doors, up a step, reveal a substantial utility room; nicely suited for larger scale catering as required.

 

Bedrooms

An accommodation wing at this end of the house has an indulgent double bedroom, a matching twin room and a cosy kid’s room.

The three share a totally tiled shower room.

The sumptuous master bedroom suite at the far end of the house enjoys a dual aspect, split level design, allowing for a flagged bay with occasional chairs, more ogee windows and that spectacular view.

The comprehensive ensuite bathroom has a walk -in shower and a full bath.

Adjacent to the suite, in yet another hexagonal radiant space, is a charming single bedroom.

A wonderful cobalt and white tiled bathroom off the corridor has a delightfully minimal but deep bath with shower.

Outside

The curved private driveway passes the all-weather tennis court en route to the house, where there is ample brick paved parking around three sides.

To the South-West a stunning zig-zag of brick terraced steps, embellished with urns, cascades down across lawns to the River Nore.

The Locality

 

 

Thomastown at 5km upstream is the nearest town to the house. There are two large supermarkets, restaurants, coffee shops, pubs and a selection of craft shops to browse.

At one stage there were 12 water-powered mills, for grain and cloth, working locally. Several mills can still be seen upstream from the bridge in Thomastown.

Fourpenny Rock House gets its name from a toll that was levied on the flat-bottom boats known as Cots that transported goods along the River Nore to the ports of Ross and Waterford, and were obliged to pass a particular rock below the house.

Dysart Castle, on the opposite side of the river, was the birth place of George Berkeley.  George, the eponymous philosopher of Berkeley University California, was active in the first half of the 18th century.

The medieval city of Kilkenny – 25km distant – is often referred to as the Marble City due to its unique black marble mining. It is the smallest city in Ireland.

Work on Kilkenny Castle was begun in 1204 and took 9 years to complete.  The Castle became the seat to the Butler family, a very powerful dynasty who lived there until 1935.
Lady Margaret Butler who was born there, was the grandmother of Anne Boleyn, second wife of King Henry VIII of England.

St Canice’s Cathedral with its Round Tower were founded in the 6th century – Cill Channigh (pr. Kil-kenny) is the Gaelic for the Church of Canice. The Round Tower – one of only two that people can climb in Ireland – is the city’s oldest building, with excellent views for those brave enough to reach the top.

The highest air temperature ever recorded in Ireland was 33.3 °C (91.9 °F), at Kilkenny Castle on 26 June 1887.

The extensive ruins of Jerpoint Abbey – 6km from the house – is another ecclesiastical site notable for its stone carvings. Built in 1180, it survived till Henry the VIII got hold of it during the period of the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1500’s.

A replica famine ship, the Dunbrody, is now berthed on the quay in New Ross and offers visitors an insight into life as a passenger during the 19th century when emigration to America was at its peak.

It was from a farm here in New Ross that President John F. Kennedy’s great-grandfather emigrated to America in 1848 on just such a ship.

Originally constructed in 1805 on the tranquil south facing slopes of the Glen of Aherlow, with exceptional views of the Galtee Mountains, the restoration of this cosy, twin turreted country castle has been a labour of love for the owners.

Just an hours drive from either Cork or Limerick City in the heartland of pastoral Ireland.

 

A very homely castle

Essentially just one room deep, almost everywher bar the kitchen, enjoys spectacular southerly views across the glen.
With no obvious entrance portico, and convenient parking in the rear courtyard, normal access is via the impressive kitchen.

Rustic country style, with a generous gas range, Belfast sink, and limestone flooring, this large kitchen is also the main dining area, with sturdy leather upholstered oak chairs and matching table.

There is a small larder adjacent, and a separate utility room off the rear lobby.

The spacious sitting room and the library alongside have original polished flooring, high ceilings and open hearths.

Both rooms also open through brass handled French doors, onto the gravelled front and that ubiquitous view.

There is a continuous vista spanning the garden level of the castle by dint of a series of connecting doors.

Past the library, the ground floor of the octagonal tower with its high windows, serves as a study – a more intimate refuge.

Beyond that, what was once the oratory retains its distinctive doors and ceiling brackets, and external impressions on the walls reminiscent of a Templar cross; an additional reception room, less formal and great as a games room.

A powder blue corridor extends across the back of the castle, connecting the ground floor rooms.​

Bedrooms

The quirky nature of 200+ year old buildings, is that there are two wheelchair friendly bedrooms – a single and a cosy double – off the sitting room at the East end of the house.

They share a small bathroom at the end of the blue corridor.

The remaining three bedrooms are arranged in a row on the next floor; two with magnificent views across to the Galtee Mountains.

The elegant master bedroom boasts a stunning contemporary ensuite bathroom.

The other 2 bedrooms share a generous traditional family bathroom with bath and shower.

There is no guest access to the zenith of the two towers.

Outside

The Castle is at the end of a long avenue that winds upwards between fields. Surrounded by 34 acres of private woods, there are spectacular walks above the property amongst the cover of ancient trees.

There is a ring fort on the property and also an ancient Legaun stone.

There is a complete set of furniture and a gas barbecue for dining Al Fresco – which you can do front or back, weather permitting.

The owners occupy the recently converted coach house to the rear should you need anything. They have separate parking and access.

Beautiful, restful, enchanting place. Very special.

We really loved our time here, there is something very special about this place, a deeply restful and calming space that’s incredibly healing. The surrounding environment is beyond beautiful, such a joy to wake to mists over the distant hills.

Sitting in the middle reading room in the mornings with the french windows giving such an amazing view. The silence was restorative and we were able to just ‘be’. Loved the big kitchen, high ceilings, furnishings, everything was so calming. After a very busy and stressful covid few months, we all felt so blessed to have come to Aherlow castle and we left lighter, calmer and ready to face the world again. Freda and Declan are lovely people and kind hosts who gave us our space but were there if we needed them. The walks in the surrounding area are also fantastic and this is an area of outstanding natural beauty.

One of my favorite holidays and the best place we’ve ever stayed in.

The annual Bansha Show this year is August 24th

 

The Locality

 

 

There are a couple of small grocery shops, some great pubs and a good butcher in the local village of Bansha only 5 minutes away, with several larger ones in Tipperary Town – 10 minutes.

The Galtee Mountains directly across from the Castle are Ireland’s highest inland mountain range. At 920 metres, Galtymore is the highest peak within the range.

A scrupulously maintained 7 foot high white cross, erected in 1975, overlooks the Glen of Aherlow from the Eastern summit – there are two.

Considered a walker’s paradise, there are a variety of mapped walking routes along forest tracks and across open moorland throughout the Glen of Aherlow.

20 minutes away, the feudal Cahir Castle, one of the largest and best preserved in Ireland, is sited on a rocky island in the river Suir. Mostly constructed by the Butler family during the 13th and 15th Centuries, it has featured in several blockbuster productions including Excalibur and more recently, The Tudors.

Discovered in 1833, and close to Cahir, The Mitchelstown Cave is one of the largest and most complex cave systems in Ireland. It features massive caverns with dripstone formations, stalactites, stalagmites, including one which stands some 9 meters in height.

The temperature within the cave remains at a constant 12° Celsius all year.

The Rock of Cashel, 30 minutes away, was once the seat of the High Kings of Munster, though little evidence remains of their time here – most of the buildings dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. This iconic structure which stands out against the skyline has a long and compeling history is one of Ireland’s most spectacular and most visited attractions.

The contemporary kitchen morphs into the dining area where a generous oak dining table takes centre stage in a corner of grid latticed windows.

For quick informal snacks there is the hi-stool breakfast bar, and just outside a alfresco terrace that straddles one end of the house and overlooks the rambling garden.

The upstairs accommodation is accessed by two separate stairs.

The Victorian bedroom is sublime with an unexpected but delightful free standing slipper bath, an open fire place, king size bed, and an eclectic mix of furniture and lighting.

The ensuite master bedroom is on the ground floor and has a king size bed.

A private floating pontoon on the bay is accessed from the pine fringed shore via a gangway, making this a perfect spot to sip a sundowner.

The house comes equipped with pretty much everything you would expect in a luxury home. In addition there’s a large outdoor jacuzzi, a charcoal barbecue, a 65” flat screen TV with DVDs as well as lots of books and games and internet. The freezer is in the utility room.
Three Kayaks are available on request.

Our stay at Westerly House was just perfect…

Annette did a great job of introducing us to the house and preparing us for the week. We had great weather and enjoyed all that West Cork has to offer. We will definitely consider Unique Irish Homes in our next trip.
[The] Westerly House was a solid house with all the amenities. Well stocked for cooking. Great setting. Quiet and conveniently located.
One suggestion: Getting in and out of the driveway was a challenge. We had two vehicles which I would assume is common for a house this size. A well placed “Traffic Mirror” would make the entry and exit so much easier.

Many thanks to Rose & Graham in Unique Irish Homes for their courteous & informative help when I booked the lovely house “Westerly” in Cork, for the celebration of my husband’s 70th birthday. We were a party of 9 adults & 4 children.

This is my first experience at using Unique Irish Homes & I can honestly say I would use them again. In an age where everything is booked online it was great to have a person at the other end of the phone to guide me & also answer questions that I had. Everything ran very smoothly. There was paperwork involved which was tiresome but I understood that it was necessary. Having done it once now it won’t be a chore next time round.
I have received my deposit for breakages back from Unique Irish Homes in a seamless transaction.

 Marie & Annette from Westerly House made our stay very welcoming & comfortable. My family had a wonderful three days in Westerly. The house was large, very comfortable & very nicely decorated. My adult kids thought it was amazing. The stunning view was visible from nearly all the rooms. The outdoor Jacuzzi was used by the youngest to the oldest. Great fun & merriment was had in it. We lit a fire in the lounge that brought atmosphere & comfort to all.

A lot of thought has been put into the set up of Westerly & all 13 of us had a wonderful time. Thanking all involved.

We recently stayed at Westerly House,

Cork and had the most amazing holiday, all the finishing touches and welcome gifts was actually why we chose not use air b n b.
Annette our house keeper was exceptional and made us feel so welcome on arrival. The house really works for a large group as there was plenty of space between bedrooms and living areas that everyone had peace and quite when needed. We loved this house so much we’ll hopefully be back soon and the photos and description online was very accurate. Thank you again!

Westerly House borders Bantry Bay at Ballylickey, in the crook of the sound 5 minutes from the vibrant town itself. There is an excellent gourmet café and deli just two minutes walk from the house. Bantry is host to a fine farmers market on Friday mornings, and there are several supermarkets, restaurants, and Pubs.

Bantry Bay is renowned for mussel fishing, and there is a deep water harbour at Whiddy Island (need to take ferry).
The island once served as an oil terminal for berthing supertankers until in 1979 the French tanker Betelgeuse exploded in what remains the biggest maritime disaster in Irish history.

At the end of the 18th century a republican group seeking to overthrow British rule in Ireland, and spurred on by activities in America and France, managed to persuade the French to send a sizeable fleet of ships and some 14,000 troops to Bantry Bay.
Storms and general mismanagement doomed the Armada – an exhibition in Bantry House details more of this, plus the gardens are fantastic.

The narrow Sheep’s Head peninsula spans the southern shores of Bantry Bay and has a pedestrian loop that makes for a completely unique walking experience.

Sailing is the most ubiquitous pastime along this stretch of Corks coastline, and from Crookhaven to Kinsale there are countless regattas throughout the summer, and great opportunities for the serious sailor to up their skills.

West Cork is blessed with an exceptionally warm and wet micro-climate. The Gulf Stream ocean current ensures that summer sea temperatures are about 17 C, approximately the same as Long Beach California. Here you can find palm trees, luxuriant sub-tropical vegetation and exotic flowers growing in abundance. Fuchsia abound, and have become the unofficial emblem of West Cork.
Glengarriff, only 10 minutes away by car, is the jump off point for visits to the magnificent and quirky and exotic gardens on Garnish Island.

The Ring of Beara road twists its way around this rugged headland that forms the northern part of Bantry Bay, exposing colourful hamlets in its path. Narrow, but with minimal traffic it is a splendid tour, and the views are spectacular. For Cyclists or walkers the Beara Way offers a safer route.

At the tip of the peninsula a spur off the loop road continues to Ballaghboy. From here you can catch Ireland’s only cable car for the ten minute ride to Dursey Island. The rickety car carries six passengers (or the equivalent in sheep) about 250m above infamous Dursey Sound, where strong tides make traveling by boat hazardous.

With magnificent views stretching from the Skellig Islands to Mizen Head, only a handful of inhabitants brave this wild and windy island. Dolphins, whales and innocent basking sharks are frequently seen in the surrounding seas.

Opening on to the decking, a series of living spaces meld together in a fluid open plan space that occupies the elbow of this L shaped home, embracing a variety of informal seating and dining areas and incorporating a contemporary cottage kitchen.

 

White walled with panelled ceiling, there’s always a panoramic backdrop of windows designed to exploit this unique location.

Whether it’s lethargic alfresco summertime luncheons or the cosy open fire at the end of a blustery beach walk, here is a holiday home for all generations and all seasons

Boisterous with the paraphernalia of family vacations, there is no shortage of books, and no shortage of corners to read them in.

There is also a dedicated television room – plastered with pictures and wall to wall movies and games – and across the entrance lobby, a smaller library with exercise bike option.

The two principal bedrooms are at opposing extremes of the cottage, each with French doors to the omnipresent perimeter decking, azure skies and lapping tides.
Both have ensuite bathrooms, though the master one shares with a twin bedroom via separate doors.

Outside

It’s impossible to avoid the seductive horizon view and seascape horizon beyond the hardy New Zealand flax that shelters the extensive decking.

There is a gravelled drive and lawned areas front and back if you fancy a bit of croquet, but with Clone Strand just metres away, sandy feet and salty hair beckon to the main beach attraction.

Facilities

This is a home from home, equipped with everything you would expect in a contemporary family residence – barbeque, clothes dryer to microwave, freezer, books, games, videos. However you will need to bring your own High Chair and Child Cot if you require them.
There is high-speed  broadband internet in the property.

The Beach House offered so much…

– true respite during these challenging pandemic months. Everything we needed in a functional kitchen, and access to a second large fridge post the big grocery shop. The living areas of the house are mainly open plan with unobstructed sea views all around, plenty of space for the full family to gather to chat, play cards or the large selection of board games on hand. At the same time, plenty of alcoves for some privacy, whether a snooze, or to give adults and children some personal space. Two separate quiet rooms – a library and a TV room with long sofa seating for everyone and stocked to the hilt with DVDs. Each of the bedrooms deliver what is most important – extremely comfortable beds and excellent bed linen, bathroom robes and towels. A bonus, most of the bedrooms allow you to wake up to the wonderful seaview. Outside a large 180 degree deck and seating overlooking and with direct access to Clone Strand with more than 2 km of uninterrupted walking. The house was spotless on arrival, clearly mindful of current extra hygiene requirements. In this era of internet being essential, it works well most of the time, with the odd hiccup. Will be back.

A perfect place for a family get together…

we had a wonderful week at the Beach House in June of this year. The house is so well appointed with a great decking surrounding two sides where we enjoyed breakfast on one side and lunch and dinner on the other. We were blessed with glorious weather and good use was made of the beach underneath the house.
There are lots of different comfortable sitting areas in the house and a great television room, lots of games, dvd and books. Good supermarkets 20 minutes away and all you could want in the way of cooking utensils and tableware etc. Comfortable beds with great linen and towels.
We would certainly consider a second visit.

County Wexford is at the centre of Ireland’s Ancient East, with magnificent beaches, fascinating history, festivals and wildlife – plus it’s all within easy reach of Dublin city…

Here are some of our favourites…

 

The Locality

 

 

The Beach House is located on the coast half way between the largish towns of Arklow and Gorey – both 20 minutes drive away. Dublin city is just over an hour by motorway to the north.

The nearest pub is the Golden Anchor – a 5 minute walk.

This is the region that receives the most sunshine in Ireland, averaging more than 7 hours a day in the early summer. Boasting some 50 kilometres of white beach, not surprisingly, it is also a very popular retreat, with multiple holiday homes along the coast.

There are terrific walks locally – north or south along the beach – but also there is a spectacular trail across Tara Hill, clearly visible form the house.

The fine weather also encourages the fruit and veg industry, most famously strawberries, which can be bought from stalls along the roadside throughout the summer. The Strawberry Festival is an annual event in the town of Enniscorthy, when a festival Queen is coronated.

Off the strand below there is excellent fishing for codling, bass and flounders especially where the river crosses the beach. The area fishes particularly well after a strong easterly wind.

Wexford town lies just over an hour to the south. Founded by the Vikings around 800 AD it is probably best known for its International Opera Festival, which takes place every year in the Theatre Royal, and runs for several weeks.
